The recent controversy over a major chatbot reproducing copyrighted text is a clear illustration of why opacity carries reputational and legal risk for everyone involved. Second, publication accelerates legitimate research. Academic groups studying alignment or fairness currently rely on indirect probes precisely because the underlying data is proprietary.
