Reading · "the Paris of the East"

A short essay on what your first months in Budapest actually feel like

Budapest is famously called "the Paris of the East", and for a first-year student that means something very specific. Mornings often begin with a coffee at one of the city's old cafés. Lecture halls are housed in nineteenth-century buildings with high ceilings, where the heating clicks gently throughout winter.

The dormitories — many universities offer them — are within walking distance of class, though most international students choose to share a small flat with a classmate or two. The cost of living is roughly half of what Western European cities charge, which makes Budapest a smart choice on a budget.

The language barrier is real for the first months, but most degree programmes are taught in English, and Hungarian friends will gladly help you order at the bakery — sometimes even before you've finished pointing.

Comprehension

1. According to the text, lecture halls are…
2. Most international students choose to live…
3. True or False: All degree programmes in Budapest are taught in Hungarian.
