15 little words. Each one is a friend of Present 🌞 OR of Past 🌙. Tap a word, then tap the right box. Green = yes! Red = try again 🔴.

Where does this word go? 🌞 or 🌙

Does the word mean "all the time" or "how often"? → Present 🌞. Does it point to "one time in the past"? → Past 🌙.

🌞 Present Simple
every day
🌙 Past Simple
one time in the past

How it works: click a word in the top row — it turns orange. Then click the column where it belongs. Wrong guess = red, click it again to send it back and try the other side. Green = correct.
💡 Big idea · what's the difference between today and yesterday?

Two tenses = two little worlds 🌞🌙

English uses two different verb shapes for things you do all the time and things that happened one time and are finished. That's it. Change the shape, change the world!

Present Simple — I play every day
Past Simple — I played yesterday Present Simple — I eat fish every day
Past Simple — I ate fish yesterday Past Simple — I slept last night
🌙
Yesterday
PAST · finished
📍
Now / every day
PRESENT · repeats
🌞 Present Simple

When: every day, usually, always, sometimes, never, on Mondays

Shape: base verb (add -s for he/she/it)

  • 🐱 Emma eats fish every morning.
  • 🐦 Birds sing in the garden.
  • 👦 Tom plays football on Sundays.

Feeling: it happens again and again.

🌙 Past Simple

When: yesterday, last week, two days ago, in 2020, this morning

Shape: verb + -ed (or a funny past form — saw, ate, went…)

  • 🐱 Emma ate fish this morning.
  • 🐦 A bird sang in the garden yesterday.
  • 👦 Tom played football last Sunday.

Feeling: it happened once. Finished. Over.

🔎 The quick trick: look at the little time word.
every day · always · usually · sometimes 🌞 use Present
yesterday · last · ago · this morning 🌙 use Past
⚠️ Watch out: after did and didn't the verb goes back to its SHORT shape. Did she eat? — NOT Did she ate?
📚 Little grammar book · look before Station 04

🌞 vs 🌙 · Two tenses at a glance

🌞 Present Simple

When?

every day · usually · always · never · on Mondays

I / you / we / they

I play. You eat fish. We go to school.

he / she / it (add -s!)

He plays. She eats. Emma sleeps.

Question

Do you play? Does she eat?

No

I don't play. He doesn't eat.

🌙 Past Simple

When?

yesterday · last week · two days ago · in 2020

Same for everybody!

I played. She played. They played.

Regular verb

play → played, cook → cooked, jump → jumped

Question

Did you play? Did she eat?

No

I didn't play. He didn't eat.

✨ The big rule: did / didn't are for yesterday. After did / didn't the verb stays SHORT: Did she eat? — NOT Did she ate?

🌞 The magic S · for he / she / it

In Present Simple only he, she or it put a little -s on the verb.

🐱 Emma plays. Emma watches birds. Emma flies to the ball. Emma has a red collar.
✏️ Your turn: pick the he/she/it form.
1
Tom always ___ (play) with Emma.
2
Emma ___ (watch) birds every morning.
3
My cat ___ (fly) to the ball!
4
Milo ___ (have) a big garden.
5
Emma ___ (go) to sleep in the sun.
6
Tom's mum ___ (study) English.

🌙 The little -ed at the end

To make a Past Simple regular verb, add -ed. But careful — sometimes the shape changes a little!

✏️ Your turn: pick the past form.
1
Yesterday Emma ___ (play) with a ball.
2
Tom ___ (live) in a small house.
3
My brother ___ (study) all evening.
4
The car ___ (stop) at the traffic light.
5
My mum ___ (cry) at the sad film.
6
We ___ (jump) in the puddles yesterday.

🔊 How to say -ed · three little sounds

The -ed ending has three sounds — but you don't choose, the last letter of the verb chooses for you!

🎯 /t/
short "t" sound
after these letters: p · k · f · s · sh · ch · x
walked · watched · jumped · kissed · washed
🎵 /d/
soft "d" sound
after all other sounds and vowels
played · opened · lived · called · cleaned
🎤 /ɪd/
extra syllable "id"
after t or d (adds 1 syllable!)
wanted · needed · waited · ended · visited
👂 Try this trick: say the verb, then say the ending. If your tongue touches the back of your teeth twice → it's /ɪd/. If only once → it's /t/ or /d/. Tap any orange word to hear it!
🎧 Your turn: which sound does each -ed have? Tap to sort.
walked — the -ed sounds like…
played — the -ed sounds like…
wanted — the -ed sounds like…
watched — the -ed sounds like…

needed — the -ed sounds like…
kissed — the -ed sounds like…
visited — the -ed sounds like…
